NNSA and Texas A&M work together to strengthen U.S. environmental security

The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and Texas A&M AgriLife Research are partnering to improve how environmental waste materials are treated while also strengthening national security. Their collaboration focuses on using electron beam (eBeam) technology as a safer alternative to radioactive materials like cobalt-60, which are commonly used in wastewater and sewage sludge treatment but can pose security risks if misused.

Researchers found that eBeam technology not only delivers better treatment results but also eliminates the dangers associated with handling radioactive sources. The partnership is also exploring how eBeam can help break down harmful PFAS chemicals, often called “forever chemicals,” to reduce environmental contamination.

Through this ongoing collaboration, NNSA and Texas A&M aim to advance innovative, safer technologies that protect public health, support environmental sustainability, and reduce radiological security threats across the United States.
